The third section of this walk is the longest one, crossing through two large parks, ancient woodland, and accross several rail lines. I set off on one of the many hot days we have had this year and immediately went the wrong direction. After that short diversion, I was on my way!
After passing the Grove Park nature reserve, I climbed the railway bridge overlooking Grovepark Station and was treated to one of my favourite views of the journey so far! I love crossing over railway lines and rivers, roads less so but they are still pretty cool. Mostly I think I just love a bridge.
I then continued along Downham woodland walk. This was a mixed experience, I enjoyed the tunnel of woodland, scattered with small pieces of art and lovely trees. Part of this walk though is contending with the fact that you are very much in a city that is full of people which sometimes leads to uncomfortable interractions. It was all fine in the end but it was in this stretch that I have had the only moment of feeling a bit unsafe so far.
I eventually made my way to Beckenham Place Park, a lovely parkland in South London that I have visited before. The Ring takes you on a meandering walk through its woodland, around the lake/lido, and up to the manor where there are several places to buy food and drink. I got a lovely greek spinach pastry and fizzy drink to enjoy whilst sitting on the grass. You can really see how the drought had hit the grass at this point, it was looking pretty crispy.
My next incredibly awkward selfie marked a big milestone on the journey. I officially hit the most southerly point of the Capital Ring route. Unfortunately, this was next to a busy children's play area so I probably looked like a proper weirdo, but it had to be done...
My dignity in tatters, I wound my way along towards Crystal Palace. As this is a particularly long stretch, I will summarise the route:
I decided to take the recommended alternative path via Lennard Road allotments, which was a good choice as they were lovely. I crossed over Penge East and under Penge West railway lines. Going under the old victorian railway bridge was pretty spectacular. I then eventually ended up in Crystal Palace Park. What a gem! It has so many cool things to see. I met up with my partner to explore the park. My main goal was, of course, to see the dinosaurs. And boy did we see some excellent (freshly restored) dinosaurs!
