I began the second stage on a hot July day. Picking back up from where I left off, I was soon on my way. Compared to my last walk, this one was to be much shorter at only 4.4 miles. Following the Green Chain walk through Eltham Park South, I passed the old conduit head for Eltham Palace, a surprising little medieval structure tucked away in Eltham.
The main goal for this walk was to explore Eltham Palace as it was on my route. It had been on my 'to do' list for some time so this was the perfect opportunity to check it out. The volunteers were all very helpful and, as it was a Monday, the site was pretty quiet. What a fascinating place it is! The original palace was Tudor in origin, and you can still see the restored great hall from that era. However, the bulk of the property is an art deco masterpiece created in the 1930s by the Courtaulds. It is completely unique, and well worth a trip!
Leaving Eltham, I had the delightful surprise of meeting some of the locals! The donkeys in the field were so friendly, I could have stayed with them all day. They were certainly an unexpected treat on this journey.
My walk finished following the footpath alongside Eltham College's playing fields which follow the River Quaggy (excellent name, less than impressive river). I popped out on Marvels Lane where I took a somewhat awkward selfie infront of the Capital Ring signpost. My discomfort taking pictures of myself, especially in random urban streets, is a constant horror on these walks. But I persist for the sake of posterity. My walk for the day was concluded and I had successfully completed the second section of the ring!
